Track and Field District Recap

May 22, 2023

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ALL ATHLETES:
Our end of the year awards night will be on Monday, May 22 in the Oak Hills High School Auditorium.  We will begin our presentation at 5:30pm and our goal is to be done in under 2 hours.  All team members and their families are invited and encouraged to attend.  Every single team member will be recognized.  There is not a strict dress code, but most team members will choose to dress nice.

There are many athletes who have never read a single one of my emails, so have no idea about this event.  Help the team out by contacting your friends to alert them about the awards ceremony tomorrow.  Thanks.

Districts Recap
The post season of track & field is an intimidating series of events.  Unlike many sports, there is no such thing as a "bye" or an "easy first round."  Everyone is just thrown to wolves right off the bat, competing right next to some athletes who will eventually become all-state in a couple weeks.  We were so proud of the way our athletes stepped up, defied expectations and rose up when adversity appeared.  Nothing is given away in competitive sports, only earned, and we had many athletes earn their way to a regional berth.  Congrats to the following athletes who qualified to the Regional Championship this week!

1st Place
  • Boys 4x800m relay- Brayden Holland, EJ Schneider, David Surman, Noah Mckee
2nd Place
  • Girls 4x800m relay- Julia Hageman, Leni Sullivan, Alyssa Hammond, Annabelle Hageman
3rd Place
  • Boys 1600m- David Surman
  • Boys 400m- Brayden Holland
  • Boys 4x400m relay- Brayden Holland, Julien Cox, James Walz, David Surman
4th Place
  • Girls 1600m- Alyssa Hammond
  • Girls 3200m- Alyssa Hammond
  • Girls Long Jump- Mandy Gehring
  • Boys 3200m- Alex Taft
  • Boys Discus- Aiden Whitaker

Athletes of the Week
Varsity
Josie Williams- Josie has had an outstanding freshman season.  She has been an incredibly positive and supportive team member as well as a standout in the long sprint events.  Josie was part of the 5th place 4x200m relay team at the District championship, which finished just 0.25 seconds off the school record.  She also made the District finals in the 400m and 4x400m relay team, in both of which she finished 7th.

David Surman- David has been unstoppable the last few weeks.  Almost every race he has run has been a new personal best.  He qualified to the Regional Championship in 3 events.  David was part of the 3rd place 4x400 relay team and 1st place 4x800 relay team.  He also ran a 9 second personal best to finish 3rd in the 1600m.

Regional Championship
The Regional Championship will be held at Wayne High School, north of Dayton.  The meet is held on Wednesday and Friday, with a similar schedule of events to the GMC and District Championships.  Field event athletes will compete at 5:00pm and running events will start at 6:30pm.  Please see the attached schedule for details.

There will be a bus leaving at 3:00 on Wednesday and 3:15 on Friday (field event athletes will be driving up earlier).  It would be wonderful to have supportive team members ride along to cheer for our Regional qualifiers.  Everyone who is a non-competitor will have to pay for a ticket using this link.
