Boys XC Races to Regionals!

October 26, 2020

District Recap

Our team finished in 4th at the district championships, which qualifies us to race at the regional championships next weekend!  The last time the Oak Hills boys qualified to Regionals was in 2015.  For the last two weeks the boys knew, in all likelihood, that beating Elder would be their ticket to regionals.  Both times we faced Elder earlier this season, they beat us and it wasn't even close.  But on Saturday, the roles were reversed as our guys put 27 points between themselves and the Panthers.  To my recollection, Oak Hills boys have not beaten Elder since 2015, so we knew that this feat would be a challenge.  So how were the Highlanders able to pull off the difficult tasks of beating Elder and simultaneously qualifying to the next round, achievements that eluded our teams the last 4 years?  The quick and easy answer is that this group was simply faster.  This is true, but it takes more than speed to get everyone to perform on the same day when it counts the most.  Our squad this season struck a wonderful balance between team cohesiveness, representation of all grades, razor sharp focus, a selfless attitude, a sense of humor, being students of the sport and goal setting.  Any single one of these attributes, if taken to the extreme by itself, makes a team implode.  Looking around at other team camps, it is safe to say that our well-rounded group is one of a kind and it works for us!  As a result of all the pleasant qualities aforementioned, our guys have earned themselves one more week!
